There is no way a person could survive at 5,000 feet in just a wetsuit. They would be crushed.

The limit for recreational diving is 130 feet / 40 meters. Technical divers with a great deal of training may push the limits to approx 240 feet / 80 meters (and many have died attempting this). Without getting too technical, this depth limit is due mainly to the way gas is absorbed into the body rather than a pressure limitation (see Andrea Doria article below).

The depth record for diving without breathing off a tank is about 165 feet / 55 meters. This is due to the limits of someone being able to hold their breath and swim, of course.

FYI so you're in the know: divers don't use an oxygen tank. It's regular air, just compressed. It's not 100% oxygen.
