I've got a "Bounty Hunter Tracker IV" metal detector, which costs about $380 Australian.

They are a really good all rounder metal detector. They will find all metal (coins, jewellery (chains are nearly impossible to find) as well as ring pulls off cans and rusty nails. They run off a 9 volt battery and are really durable.

Choose a detector which allows you to tinker with 'sensitivity'. That way, you can customise the metals that it responds to. High sensitivity is good for less dense, precious metals, where as low sensitivity will pick up just steel or iron.

There are different kinds of detectors for different kinds of prospecting. It depends on where you are looking and what kind of metals are indigenous to the area.
